Love Is Stronger: From Love Parade to Rave The Planet will become available through Germany’s ARD Mediathek on July 31, 2026. Directed by Britta Mischer, the film combines previously unreleased material documenting Rave The Planet with rare and partly private archive footage from the Love Parade years.
Rather than presenting the story only as a celebration of a legendary electronic music event, the documentary examines the conflicts, personal decisions and organisational pressures behind its transformation. It asks whether the cultural legacy of Love Parade can be continued without repeating the mistakes that accompanied its expansion and eventual collapse.
The film follows Love Parade co-founder Dr. Motte and Ellen Dosch-Roeingh, co-founder and shareholder of the non-profit Rave The Planet organisation. Dosch-Roeingh has played several central roles in the project, including parade management, public relations and creative direction. Their work toward the first Rave The Planet parade in 2022 forms the documentary’s present-day narrative.
Love Parade began in Berlin in 1989 as a political demonstration created by Dr. Motte, artist Danielle de Picciotto and a wider team of organisers. Its early message centred on peace, music and collective participation, at a time when Berlin’s emerging techno community was creating new spaces across a rapidly changing city.
Over the following decade, the parade grew from a relatively small gathering into an internationally recognised mass event. Hundreds of thousands of people travelled to Berlin for its largest editions, turning the parade into one of electronic music’s most visible cultural phenomena.
That growth also introduced financial, logistical and political tensions. Rising costs and increasing commercial pressure moved the event further away from its underground beginnings. The Love Parade brand was sold in 2005, after which Dr. Motte withdrew from the event. Berlin hosted its final edition in 2006 before later parades took place elsewhere in Germany.
The documentary also addresses the 2010 disaster in Duisburg, where 21 people died and more than 650 were injured. The tragedy ended the Love Parade and left an enduring impact on survivors, relatives and the wider electronic music community. Love Is Stronger places that history within the attempt to build a new parade while acknowledging the responsibility attached to its legacy.
Rave The Planet finally reached the streets of Berlin on July 9, 2022. Conceived as a cultural and political demonstration rather than a direct recreation of the former event, it sought to reconnect with values associated with the early techno movement: peace, love, community, tolerance and respect.
The film expands its perspective beyond Dr. Motte by giving significant space to women who shaped both the original movement and its continuation. Alongside Ellen Dosch-Roeingh, contributors include Danielle de Picciotto and designer Heike Mühlhaus, whose experiences add personal detail to a history often told mainly through its most visible male figures.
Westbam also appears as a witness to the parade’s development from a small Berlin procession into a worldwide symbol of rave culture. Through these different accounts, the documentary explores how the movement’s ideals changed as its audience, financial demands and cultural influence expanded.
Director Britta Mischer has documented Rave The Planet since its early stages. Her previous work includes the feature documentary Bar25 – Days Out of Time, which examined another important part of Berlin’s club culture. In Love Is Stronger, she follows the internal discussions, setbacks and compromises involved in bringing a major techno demonstration back to the German capital.
The production was created by Beetz Brothers in cooperation with 25films for ARD Kultur, WDR, rbb and SWR. It also opens ARD’s wider programming focus on club culture, which will examine key events and developments from different parts of the scene.
Love Is Stronger: From Love Parade to Rave The Planet will stream through ARD Mediathek from July 31. It is also scheduled to air on rbb television on August 12, 2026, at 22:15.
